Are Suddenly Sore, Swollen Gums a Dental Emergency?

Are Suddenly Sore, Swollen Gums a Dental Emergency?

If you notice that, out of the blue, that your gums are hurting badly and are puffy and inflamed, you might wonder if it’s a problem that will resolve on its own with time or if it’s cause for concern — and an immediate visit to the dentist.

Unfortunately, your gum health reveals many problems — some serious. In this post, we’ll go over when you need emergency dental care for painful, swollen gums.

Fortunately, Dr. Ali Saeghi offers expert emergency dental care at Modern Age Dentistry, and patients appreciate his availability for such unexpected and urgent situations. He’s dedicated not only to providing general and family dentistry services, cosmetic dentistry treatments, dental implants, and more, but also to educating patients about the vital importance of maintaining their dental health.

When inflamed, painful gums equal an emergency

Several dental situations accompanied by pain and unexpectedly swollen gums are serious.

Here are some situations in which gums that hurt and are swollen call for an immediate trip to our office.

  1. A periodontal abscess

Gum disease develops when plaque accumulates on your teeth and it isn’t cleaned off through brushing and flossing. It then hardens into tartar, which only a dental professional can remove.

Gums that have been ignored for a long time bleed, swell, become red, and hurt. Along with advanced gum disease comes the risk of a periodontal abscess, which is a swollen, pus-filled, painful pocket in your gums.

Other signs you may have an infection of are  persistent bad breath, a toothache or loss of a tooth, and even a fever or swollen lymph nodes.

  1. A severe allergic reaction

Certain allergic reactions to food, insect stings, and other triggers can become life-threatening quickly, putting you at risk for anaphylactic shock (when your throat closes up, and you can’t breathe).

Aside from choking, dizziness, trouble breathing, and other severe symptoms, a swollen mouth and gums can indicate a serious allergic reaction that requires prompt treatment. If you’re found to have an allergy, you must carry an EpiPen (epinephrine) with you at all times.

  1. A piece of food has lodged itself below your gumline

If you eat food, this is possible! Often, the offending item will work itself out on its own, but sometimes, you need a dentist to identify and remove it, especially if pain and swelling become more intense.

  1. A dental device that’s gone awry

Sometimes, improperly fitted dentures or alignment trays can cause swelling and pain. Get relief by visiting Dr. Saeghi, who can make any necessary adjustments for your comfort.

  1. An oral cancer

Thankfully, this isn’t a common problem, but any mouth bumps or lumps you discover should be evaluated right away. As with all cancers, the earlier oral cancer is detected, the better your chances of a positive prognosis.

Dr. Saeghi can help if you find yourself in pain with badly swollen gums. You shouldn’t have to “grin and bear” these types of problems; we advise that you always have him check them out to ensure that urgent intervention isn’t needed.

Many people experience temporary gum swelling and pain due to a variety of causes, from hormonal shifts, vitamin deficiencies, and even using a new and unfamiliar toothpaste, but it’s best to consult with Modern Age Dentistry to make certain your situation isn’t serious.

We’re here to help, and your oral health and comfort is our No. 1 concern.
